Smut Marathon Round 4 Voting!

SM round 4

This has been a tough one, I’ll have to admit. The concept behind this assignment for the Smut Marathon may have sounded easy to many of us when this began, but we soon realized just how difficult this would be in practice. On the 8th of April, the 39 of us that remained were tasked with a new assignment, which was as follows:

Write a hot, erotic masturbation scene where your character uses a sex toy.
One character. One sex toy. No brand names.

I want sizzling hot stories; stories that will make the readers want to wank!!!

Your masturbation scene is a maximum of 300 words.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, and believe me, I thought the same thing. The first thought to go through anyone’s head would be, “Heck, I write about sex all the time. A masturbation scene would be right in my wheelhouse.” That is, until you realize, “Shit, this is in everyone’s wheelhouse.” And that’s where I realized the real challenge of this assignment would be.

In the second round of the Smut Marathon, one of the judges left feedback stating they liked my story, but it was too similar to another entry for them to give me more points. I fell behind in round 2 because another writer and I had a very similar idea. Granted, I can’t control that kind of outcome, since none of us are allowed to discuss our entries. I couldn’t have known the other writer had that same idea, but it does force me to reconsider how I think about my future entries. Not only do I ponder whether my entries are good enough, but are they also unique enough?

Also, as I’ve stated in a previous post about the start of this round, my worry is still coming true. There were 40 of us at the end of round 3, and then one withdrew, leaving 39. As of the start of the voting for round 4, there are now 34 entries. A total of 6 writers have now withdrawn for various reasons. I’m not disappointed or upset that they left. I understand everyone has their own reasons and their own things going on in their lives. I don’t fault those writers for withdrawing, I only feel saddened that they couldn’t continue with all of us. But I’ll continue to follow their work, and read what they have on their websites and ebooks. After all, one of the best things about this contest has been all the amazing writers I met, the friends I’ve made, and new contacts to network with. I feel like that alone has been the real reward here.

Oh! I almost forgot. We have two new sponsors for this year’s Smut Marathon. The first is Sexy Little Pages, a UK-based erotica publishing group headed by Anna Sky. While the winner and two runners-up will have their Smut Marathon entries published, a selection will also be made amongst all entrants. Which means all of us have the chance to be published as well. The second new sponsor is Doxy, also based in the UK, and one of the best manufacturers of massaging wands in the world. For the winner, Doxy has promised a selection of any of their products the winner chooses. I can’t say I’d have much use for a massaging wand, but maybe my wife would like it.

I think that’s about all I’ll say about this round, for now. For everyone reading, the voting for round 4 is now open and will be closed on May 5th at midnight in Amsterdam. But I suggest making your vote before then. Don’t forget to read every entry before casting your votes, and remember you can vote for 3 stories max. Also, I know it’s a lot to ask, but it would be very helpful if you could leave feedback on the stories you’ve read. They won’t be shown until the voting round is over, so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment after posting it.You can check out all the entries, and make your vote by following this link.

Wish me luck in this round!

Good luck! It sounds like this marathon has been stretching and challenging your writing and creativity. Seems like a good thing, you’re talented no matter what the outcome of the marathon, you’ve never given up and put out some fantastic pieces.

A very generous and informative post. I love the expression ‘in the wheelhouse’ which I’d never heard before. Wishing you all the best in the competition.

You have hit the nail on the head. Where this assignment looked easy, the real challenge indeed was to make your story stand out. I think you did well 🙂
